A malfunctioning car driveshaft exhibits several noticeable symptoms. Firstly, a metallic knocking sound during sudden speed changes while driving might indicate loose flanges or universal joint cross shaft bearings due to excessive wear. Secondly, a clear metallic impact sound during vehicle start-up or gear changes, more pronounced in low gears, suggests excessive clearance between the inner ring and shaft of the center support. Additionally, a continuous clicking sound accompanied by vibration could mean loose fixing bolts on the center support bracket. Furthermore, a crisp, rhythmic metallic knocking sound at low speeds, persisting even in neutral coasting, may be due to excessive clamping force on the universal joint bearing housing, hindering its smooth rotation. If the driveshaft noise increases with vehicle speed, and the center support bearing emits a dull, continuous, muffled sound, it indicates excessive wear and looseness in the center support bearing. Finally, erratic and occasional metallic knocking noises suggest the driveshaft's universal joints may not be in the same plane, disrupting the constant velocity arrangement. To prevent these issues, preventative measures include avoiding starting in high gear, abruptly releasing the clutch pedal, overloading, and speeding, along with regular checks of the driveshaft's condition, suspension mounting firmness, support rubber integrity, connections for looseness, and driveshaft deformation. To ensure driveshaft dynamic balance, inspect balance weights for detachment and make assembly marks during repair and disassembly to maintain the original assembly relationship. Regular lubrication of the universal joint cross shaft bearings with appropriate grease is also crucial for proper operation.
